SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina found Bernie, named Jurni back then, limping by the side of the road. They learned that she had once belonged to a family, but she didn’t have a very good life with them. She spent most of her years chained up inside the backyard, starved.
Rescuers pulled Bernie out of her old life. In no time, they found her a foster home, where she spent her time adding weight and gaining strength. It was a very long journey, but she was fortunate to be with Carly because she’s the best foster she could have.
Bernie was very unsure of herself and her surroundings at first. She was never on a leash and never took walks. Everything was pretty new to her.
The poor dog feared everything around her. The squeaky toys left her terrified. But when she saw Carly’s dogs play with them, she decided to give it a try. And pretty soon, she couldn’t get enough of them.
It was the biggest milestone for her, said Carly. She was once horrified with them, but suddenly, she was running down the stairs and all over the house with her squeaky toys. She’s obsessed with them.
Bernie gained confidence in no time. She also underwent surgery to repair her displaced kneecap. Soon enough, she was ready to leave for a new home.
Volunteers at the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina thought Bernie was Carly’s next dog. They were perfect together and they obviously adored one another. While she agreed, Carly knew there was someone better for the dog, and she was right.
A man named Gabriel saw Bernie’s picture and story on social media. He offered her a home and everyone at the rescue agreed he’s a perfect match. Even Carly knew he was the best pick. It was so happy to see her go with him, that’s what she said. And she was right, Gabriel and Bernie were made for each other.
