Caden Medernach, an eight-year-old boy from Illinois, is being hailed a hero for calmly calling 911, which saved her mom after she fell into a frozen lake near their home. His mom, Cathy, was trying to save their dog who earlier fell into the icy water too.
Cathy and Caden were walking their dog Baily near their home in Aurora, Illinois. But then, when they went passed a frozen lake, the dog saw some ducks and decided to chase them. When the dog got near the middle of the lake, where the ice was still thin, it cracked, and he fell inside.
Cathy saw that their dog had difficulties getting out of the freezing water, and she decided to help. She saw a standing canoe and tried to paddle herself out to the dog. As the top was icy, she had difficulties herself getting near. And when she was close to Baily, her paddle struck ice, which caused her to topple over.
Cathy fell in the frigid water too and was next to Baily. Now both of them were trapped. Cathy called out to her son and told him to call 911. Startled, the boy ran back to their home and called his father, informing him of what happened. The dad told him to call 911 as he rushed to get back home.
Caden did as he was told and calmly explained to the operator what happened. He waited by the line as police and emergency workers immediately headed out to them. By that time, Cathy had painstakingly dragged herself out to the shore through mushy water and ice. Baily, though was still stuck in the river.
Rescuers then went out to the lake to get the 11-year-old dog. By that time, Cathy estimates that Baily was in the icy lake for half an hour. Thankfully, after they warmed up the dog, he was okay. Caden’s parents, and the authorities, credit Caden for his calm demeanor in handling the situation.
Thanks to him, the rescuers were able to get clear details of what happened and conduct the rescue properly.
